This is a Tripel from the Allagash Brewing Company of Maine. The alcohol content is 11%. This is not your typical Tripel; it is a Bourbon barrel-aged Tripel. It pours a cloudy straw yellow with a foamy white head. The nose is a mix of floral hops, bourbon, and oak. The taste is similar and adds yeast and apples to the mix. The carbonation is moderate and the beer is rather smooth overall. I am glad I tried this beer (thanks to Neil for the suggestion). The 11% takes its toll (it is a larged, corked bottle) and the bourbon flavor is rather dominating as you reach the third glass. Don’t buy this expecting a standard Tripel.
This Tripel comes out of the Allagash Brewing Company of Maine. I had a corked bottle labeled Batch 118. The alcohol content is 9%. This beer pours a honey yellow color that was somewhat cloudy. There is a thin white head that dissipates quickly. I smell spices (peppery) and fruit (melons). The taste is a mix of spice, citrus, and yeast. The mouthfeel is unique with an interesting mix of creamy and carbonated and spicy alcohol kick. Overall, this is a very nice beer. A good example of the style and I enjoyed the spicy slant of this brew. I’d buy it again.
This brew comes from the Allagash Brewing Company in Portland, Maine. The style is Belgian dubbel (with Chimay Red and Westmalle being two more well-known representatives). The bottle was corked and labeled as Batch #68. The beer pours a dark, toffee brown with a thick and foamy tan head. The smell was earthy and bready, but mostly subdued. The taste was unimpressive; I noticed a malty taste that was mostly watery. Possibly a bad bottle? I haven’t had any other Allagash brews, but they come highly recommended. Compared to other dubbels I’ve had, this one was in over its head. The alcohol content is 7%, but not directly noticeable. I may try another bottle; until then, I don’t recommend this brew.
