Nostradamus

This is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale from the Brasserie Caracole of Belgium. The alcohol content is 9%. The beers pours medium brown in color with a light tan head. The nose is mostly dark fruits and alcohol. The taste is almost all dark fruits, with raisins and plums being the standouts; sweets malts are also present. The beer is fairly carbonated. This one was a bit too sweet for my tastes.

Trois Pistoles

This a Belgian Strong Dark Ale from Unibroue of Canada. I’ve enjoyed some of their other beers, so I had high expectations for this one. This beer pours dark brown with a tan head. I notice malts in the nose complemented by a mix of dark and citrus fruits. The taste is complex (and difficult to describe). I notice pumpernickel bread, cherries, dark fruits, and sweet malts. The alcohol, at 9%, is hidden very well. This is a really good beer! I’ll buy it again.

Gouden Carolus Classic

This Belgian Strong Dark Ale is from Brouwerij Het Anker of Belgium. The alcohol content is strong at 8%. This beer pours a walnut brown color with red highlights. There is a foamy, light tan head which dissipates quickly leaving little lacing at all. I notice raisins, vanilla, and fig in the nose. The taste follows up with dark fruits, sweet malts and a hint of that alcohol. The beer starts off smooth, but finishes rather thin. This one was not bad, but not impressive either. I won’t buy it again.

Delirium Nocturnum

This is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale from the Brouwerij Huyghe of Belgium. It pours a medium brown color with reddish highlights. A thick, foamy tan head dominates the glass. I notice alcohol, dark fruits, and a hint of apple in the nose. The taste is a mix of malt and various dark fruits with a hint of spice. The mouthfeel is slightly over-carbonated; I would have preferred it to be a bit more creamy. The alcohol, at 8.5%, is hidden reasonably well. To compare this with other brews of the same style, I would rank it well below Rochefort 8, well above Maudite, and maybe just a notch or two below Chimay (blue). I’d buy this beer again.

Trappistes Rochefort 8

This is a ‘Belgian Strong Dark Ale’ out of the Brasserie de Rochefort (Abbaye de Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy) brewery in Belgium. It pours a dark, cloudy brown with a healthy light tan head. Noticeable scents were the alcohol, dark fruits, and caramel. The taste is dominated by fruits, malt, and caramel and finishes off with a spicy/alcohol kick. The alcohol level is high at 9.2%. This is probably the best example of this beer style, edging out the Chimay Grande Reserve.
