I went out Monday to the Old Pitt Street Bridge. The place was empty save for a few walkers at times. I scored my favorite spot on the bridge and stayed out there for about 3.5 hours. Great, peaceful afternoon. And a successful one too; I ended up bringing in about 15 legal crabs. Stress on the word legal, as a natural resources officer (with a gun) approached me and measured my crabs. I had a couple of borderline crabs, but they all passed thankfully (the fine is $465/crab and the minimum size is 5 inches point-to-point along the shell).
Bailed out of work around 12:30 today and headed for the Old Pitt Street Bridge in Mt. Pleasant which is only minutes away. The bridge used to connect Mt. Pleasant to Sullivan’s Island (and cars drove over it at one point). I first crabbed this spot in Spring 1990 and have spent a lot of time here over the years. It is very relaxing and peaceful – particularly on weekdays. Today was mostly sunny and pretty hot (weather channel says 88, but it felt like lower-to-mid 90s to me). I took some pictures of my crabbing spot to give you an idea of how great a place it is – also because I wasn’t catching many crabs. It has been a rough Summer for crabbers up and down the East Coast (my best day this year has been about a dozen – I’ve filled buckets on great days in the past).
