Sierra Nevada Kellerweis

This beer is of the Hefeweizen style and made by the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of California. It pours an orange-yellow color with a thick, off-white head. There are strong scents of yeast, banana, and clove. The taste includes the banana and yeast with a strong influence of pepper. The beer is crisp and dry and easily drinkable at 4.8% alcohol. This beer in one line: imagine if the Belgians made a hefeweizen. Good beer overall; I’ll look for it again.

Stoudt's Heifer-in-Wheat

This is a Hefeweizen from Stoudts Brewing Company of Pennsylvania. The beer pours a clear, orangish-yellow with no real head to speak of. I notice the usual citrus hops and banana that is expected of the style in both the scent and the taste. Overall, the beer is light in flavor and lacks that typical hefe creaminess that the Germans know how to produce. This one wouldn’t make my short list for this style.

Maisel's Weisse Original

This is a Hefeweizen from Brauerei Gebrüder Maisel GmbH & Co. of Germany. The alcohol content is 5.4%. The beer pours a copper-orange color with a foamy white head. The beer smells strongly of yeast with lemon and banana notes. This one is sweet upfront, then some banana, and a spicy, somewhat dry, finish. This was a decent beer, but nothing special. There are many Hefeweizens I’d choose before it.

Victory Sunrise Weissbier

This Hefeweizen is from the Victory Brewing Company of Pennsylvania. It pours a slightly hazy yellow color with a foamy white head. I notice banana, clove, and citrus in the nose. The taste is big on clove, banana, wheat, and more clove. The mouthfeel is a carbonated/spicy with a dry finish. The alcohol content is 5.7%. The beer was quite good overall. Pretty true to the style and strong on the cloves. I’d buy it again.

Hacker-Pschorr Weisse

This Hefeweizen is from Hacker-Pschorr Bräu GmbH of Germany. The alcohol content is 5.5%. It pours a murky honey color with a large foamy white head. I notice the traditional wheat, lemon, and yeast aromas but no banana or clove. The taste is mild and includes spices, butter, and citrus. The mouthfeel is fairly smooth upfront and then finishes with a little carbonated spice at the end. This Hefeweizen was decent but nothing special. I probably won’t go out of my way to buy it again.
