Founders Imperial Stout

This is a Russian Imperial Stout from the Founders Brewing Company in Michigan. I’ve had their Breakfast Stout before which is excellent so I had high hopes going into this one. This beer delivers in every way. I’ve never poured a beer so dark in my life: pure black. There is a dark tan head with lots of creamy bubbles on top. The nose is a mix of chocolate, alcohol, figs, and plums. The taste is also complex with flavors of dark fruit, chocolate, roasted coffee, and spice. The beer is creamy and unbelievably smooth. This beer earns the Imperial title in every way (including the 10.5% alcohol). Great offering.

Stoudts Fat Dog

This Imperial Stout is made by the Stoudts Brewing Company of Pennsylvania. The alcohol content is 9%. The beer pours very dark brown with a thin tan head. I smell roasted malts and they smell great, along with a bit of alcohol and chocolate. The taste is roasted malts upfront, a little bit of hops, and then a finish that includes a hint of dark fruit and alcohol. This brew was nothing special. The taste was a bit of a letdown after the impressive nose. There are many better Imperial Stouts out there.

Big Bear Black Stout

This is a Russian Imperial Stout from the Bear Republic Brewing Company of California. It weighs in heavy at 8.1% alcohol. The beer pours black with a thick, dark tan head. I notice roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, and anise in the nose. The beer is sweet upfront with chocolate and malt, then coffee, dark fruits, followed up by a lingering bitter hop finish. This beer was really good and the price was right. I’d buy this one again.

Founders Breakfast Stout

This is an Imperial Stout from Founders Brewing Company of Michigan. It pours black with a thick, dark tan head. I notice some hops in the nose and a dominating smell of coffee – something you might brew for royalty. There are also hints of chocolate. The taste is big on roasted malts, balanced out by some bitter hops and contains robust coffee flavor, dark chocolate, and oatmeal. This brew is incredible. The mouthfeel is creamy. This is a big beer: an 8.3% alcohol content that is hidden very well. Excellent all around beer – a favorite of mine now. I will buy this again. Maybe tomorrow.

Storm King Stout

This Russian Imperial Stout is brewed by Victory Brewing Company of Pennsylvania. The alcohol content is 9.1% – normal for the style. The beer pours a very dark brown, almost black with a thin dark tan head. I notice strong chocolate and coffee aromas. The taste follows the nose with chocolate, roasted malts, bitters hops and a hint of that alcohol bite. The mouthfeel is creamy and finishes off with dry, bitter hops. Overall, this is a very nice beer. I will definitely buy this one again.
