Hennepin (Farmhouse Ale)

Hennepin is a Saison (or Farmhouse Ale) brewed by Brewery Ommegang of New York. The alcohol content is 7.7%. This beer pours a very pale and cloudy yellow with a thick white head. The scent is amazing and complex: I pick up notes of honey, bananas, orange, spice and a little bit of funk. I taste fruits and a peppery spice. The beer is heavily carbonated and the mouthfeel is tart and crisp. I enjoyed this beer and am now intrigued to try more from the style.

Ommegang Abbey Ale

This Dubbel is made by the Brewery Ommegang in New York. It pours a deep brown with strong red highlights and a tan head that dissipates quickly. The nose is dominated by cherries and malt. The taste contains malt, cherries, raisins, and raspberries. The carbonation dances on your tongue with a dry, peppery finish. The beer boasts an 8.5% alcohol level which is not noticeable in the nose or the taste. Overall, I enjoyed this brew (much more than my first Ommegang experience). I’d buy it again. But, as far dubbels go, there are many more I’d ranked above it.

Ommegang Three Philosophers

This is a blended Quadrupel from the Brewery Ommegang in New York. I picked up a 2007 edition bottle which was 9.8% alcohol. It poured a brownish amber color with a thick, off-white head leaving outstanding amounts of lacing. I notice hints of bread, yeast, spice, and raisins in the nose. The taste is a balance between sweet malts and a tart cherry finish. The mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth. This beer is quite warming, but the alcohol is otherwise well hidden. It would probably make a good pair with dark chocolate for dessert. An interesting beer overall. It lags well behind the St. Bernardus and Rochefort examples in this style. But it is probably not fair to make that comparison since this is really a blended quadrupel in that a cherry-infused ale is added to the underlying ale. It wasn’t bad, but I likely won’t purchase it again.
