Neuzeller Porter

This is a Baltic Porter from Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle GmbH of Germany. The pour was very dark brown with a foamy, dark tan head. The nose is varied with notes of dark candied fruits, oats, chocolate, and malt. I noticed roasted malts, brown sugar, slightly bitter hops, and raisins in the taste with a chocolate/coffee finish. The body is smooth and the 7.1% alcohol reasonably well hidden. Overall, this is a nice Baltic porter.

Founders Porter

This is an American Porter from the Founders Brewing Company in Michigan. Having had the Breakfast Stout and the Imperial Stout from Founders, I was excited to try their Porter. This one pours black with a dark tan head. The nose is dominated by roasted coffee, chocolate, and a flavorful alcohol. The mouthfeel on this one is creamy – a bit more than most Porters (and welcomed!). The taste is a healthy union of chocolate, roasted coffee, and hops. The alcohol weighs in at 6.5%. Good beer overall.

Shipyard Imperial Porter

This beer is a Baltic Porter from the Shipyard Brewing Company of Portland, Maine. It pours a very dark brown with mahogany highlights. A thin, dark tan head is present but dissipates quickly. The scent is a mix of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts. I notice dark fruit and chocolate flavors followed up by a slightly bitter finish of roasted coffee. Some hints of smoke come through as well. The mouthfeel is a bit thin for a beer labeled Imperial. The alcohol content comes in at 7.1%. Overall, a decent beer.

Meantime London Porter

Meantime London Porter is an English Porter from the Meantime Brewing Company of England. I’ve been trying to get a bottle of this one for 3 years and the day has finally arrived. The alcohol content is 6.5%. The beer initially pours with lots of carbonation and a monstrous foamy head. The color is dark brown with ruby highlights. I notice fig, chocolate and malt in the nose. There are a lot of flavors going on here: roasted malt, licorice, dark fruits, and a subtle earthy smoke. The mouthfeel, at first, is carbonated (too much so). But this settles down considerably upon warming and becomes much more creamy. The head never truly goes away leaving a nice swirl of tan and white at the top of your beer throughout. The beer is very warming. You have to be patient with this beer; it gets significantly better upon warming up. Pour it in the glass and let it sit for 10 minutes – it will be worth it. Outstanding beer and I’ll buy it again.
