Smuttynose IPA

This is an American IPA from Smuttynose Brewing Company of New Hampshire. I’ve been really impressed with offerings I’ve tried from them, so I gave this IPA a shot (not a favorite style of mine). The alcohol content is 6.6%. This beer pours a golden honey color with little to no head. The nose is all citrus (mostly grapefruit). The taste is dominated by hops – grasslike. No real sweetness of note to balance this one out. If you’re a hophead, you’ll like this one. I’m not a big fan of this beer, but this more due to the style than this particular beer.

Shoal's Pale Ale

This American Pale Ale is made by the Smuttynose Brewing Company in New Hampshire. It pours a honey amber color with a thick, off-white head. The beer is 5% alcohol. I didn’t notice a lot of activity in the nose, aside from some hops and mild citrus. The taste included a hint of citrus (orange) and an incredibly well-balanced mix of sweets malts and mild hops. This beer tastes very good and is smooth all the way down. This should probably be listed as an English Pale Ale instead. I recommend it strongly. I drank mine at sunset today with some fresh crabs I caught.

Smuttynose Robust Porter

Smuttynose Robust Porter is an American Porter out of the Smuttynose Brewing Company in New Hampshire. It pours black with a thick tan head. I notice chocolate, coffee, and citrus in the nose. The taste is very bold – strong cocoa and roasted coffee contributions are dominant. There is a slightly bitter hop finish, but the beer is well-balanced. This is great stuff. The mouthfeel is very smooth. The alcohol content is normal for the style at about 5.7%. Overall, this is an outstanding porter. One of the best I’ve ever had; definitely the best American porter I’ve ever had. I was sorry to find the bottom of the glass with this one. I’ll buy it again.
