This is a Tripel from the Allagash Brewing Company of Maine. The alcohol content is 11%. This is not your typical Tripel; it is a Bourbon barrel-aged Tripel. It pours a cloudy straw yellow with a foamy white head. The nose is a mix of floral hops, bourbon, and oak. The taste is similar and adds yeast and apples to the mix. The carbonation is moderate and the beer is rather smooth overall. I am glad I tried this beer (thanks to Neil for the suggestion). The 11% takes its toll (it is a larged, corked bottle) and the bourbon flavor is rather dominating as you reach the third glass. Don’t buy this expecting a standard Tripel.
Maredsous 10 is a Tripel from the Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat NV of Belgium. The beer pours a golden honey color with a big foamy head. I notice fruit, spices, and floral scents in the nose. The taste starts with malty sweetness, followed up by some fruit, and then a mild alcohol burn. The alcohol content is 10%. This beer was OK, but there are much better Tripels out there. I likely won’t buy this one again.
This Tripel comes out of the Allagash Brewing Company of Maine. I had a corked bottle labeled Batch 118. The alcohol content is 9%. This beer pours a honey yellow color that was somewhat cloudy. There is a thin white head that dissipates quickly. I smell spices (peppery) and fruit (melons). The taste is a mix of spice, citrus, and yeast. The mouthfeel is unique with an interesting mix of creamy and carbonated and spicy alcohol kick. Overall, this is a very nice beer. A good example of the style and I enjoyed the spicy slant of this brew. I’d buy it again.
This Tripel comes from Brouwerij St. Bernardus NV in Belgium. This is one of my favorite breweries and this tripel doesn’t disappoint. It pours a cloudy pale yellow with hints of amber and an enormous foamy white head (3-4 fingers deep). The alcohol content is 8% and noticeable in the scent, along with grass, spices, and banana. I notice bananas and peppery spices in the taste. The mouthfeel is creamy with a little bit of tingling from the spice and then a dry finish. Overall a good beer and a great example of the style.
This is a ‘tripel’ from Bieres de Chimay in Belgium. I’ve had the blue and red labels from Chimay and had been patiently waiting to try the white. It did not disappoint. I sampled an 11.2 oz bottle which was 8% alcohol. The beer pours a brilliant, honey color with a thick and creamy white head. I noticed bready scents, as well spices and citrus in the nose. The beer has noticeable carbonation on the tongue and tastes of spice, apples, and bread. Although not my favorite tripel, this is a good example of the style and I’d recommend it to anyone.
